......... ""I had already come to realize that education in India did not necessarily mean the person was ‘liberated’ and ‘educated’ in the mind""

There's lot being said about this, but this is very relative. The fact that we are really educated is shows up everywhere(in every person).

knowledge, education and wisdom are progressive, but getting back to your topic, exposure can happen by chance and by taking a chance, the outcome is dependent on the weight given to one of the two.

Liked your post on "Is Bangalore Silcon Valley"? I agree - it isn't and it is premature on our part to go to town making that claim. It is like claims of "Developed by 2020" or "Superpower by 20xx" - as a people we are more about form than substance - our marketing running way ahead of our realities.

The issue fundamentally is lack of angel capital Though in 1999 when we set out to startup for doing products in India, it was also lack of "product mindset" engineers. That has changed though I still think not enough. Even in 1999 we started by first attracting a small group of folks experienced in US based product companies before assembling the rest of the team around it. As I like to claim our first Ad was in the San Jose Mercury News not TOI, Bangalore. Though success was more then due to a website - return2india site rather than the ads.

As a product based entrepreneur, I feel by now I have made all the mistakes possible and from here on it can only get better. I would, however, like the chance to meet with you and interact just in case there are more mistakes to be made :-), especially given your marketing background which is one function that remains a mystery for me (or is it an enigma shrouded in mystery :-)). I do feel I know a thing or two about doing products in India given I like to believe we were probably one of a handfull of companies that could be counted on one hand, doing this in 1999.

If possible do send me email at arunm_blr@yahoo.com. I back in Bangalore Oct 18th onwards.

BTW, I worked with a Vittal Kini at Intel, Oregon. Any relation of yours?

Hi Savitha,

Excellent article!

The fact is - like you said - we have many back offices offering customer support - BUT most of the time, we don`t have attitude that demands quality of service. This results in service providers taking customers for granted. Things will improve only if there is stiff competition - which Jet does not have on the route you mentioned - or when customers stand up and demand QoS.

Dear Savitha, Very nice article! I too underwent similar situation during my college years....since I had chosen to do my bachelors in Mechanical engineering. Many questioned my choice - and that was way back in 1989. While I find it funny, some question it and find it surprising even in this day and age....I have to proudly mention that my late father...then encouraged me to do what I really wanted to do. I wholeheartedly agree with you that we should not dictate our kids regarding career choices...specially given the fast changing world of tech and business. Really! What we think is good and lucrative career today - may not be true just 5 or 10 yrs later. Right?

Post-war consumerism is what built the USA -- for better or worse -- into what it is today. In fact, the USA government is giving us Americans about $700 a piece this month and telling us to spend it for the good of the economy. Ultra-consumerism isn't all bad, but it isn't all good either.

Its good to come across your blog. It seems that there are more blogs than one would imagine covering the startup space here in india.

Do stay in touch.

Your feelings echo that of many other Indians. I also wrote about it some time back here:
http://www.hindu.com/mp/2006/04/24/stories/2006042401860400.htm

But I think, what I and you both forgot is the economic disparity between the Indian middle class and the western middle class (in terms of spending capacity, social security etc.), which is one of the prime reasons for the Indian middle class tendency of looking for steady jobs.

Even so, the idealist that I am, I think pursuing a passion as a career is what we need to do and encourage.
